Abeo Corporation Teams with Florida State University Applied Behavior Sciences Department to Improve Human-Technology Performance in an Advanced Security Environment

Tallahassee, Florida - August 18, 2006 - Is it possible to scan banks of security television monitors for hours at a time and reliably spot security breaches and violations? Answering this question and similar ones have led to the joining of forces between Florida State University's (FSU) Behavior Analysis Research Center in the Department of Psychology in Tallahassee, Florida and Abeo Corporation, a Herndon, Virginia based technology systems integrator.

The arrangement started when Dr. Jon Bailey, a Professor of Psychology who has taught behavior analysis for over three decades at FSU, read a press release about recent security improvements at Tallahassee Regional Airport (TLH). He tracked down program manager Bill Adams from the prime contractor G5 Technologies and learned about RAPIN (Rapid Intrusion Interception and Neutralization), a security system prototype initiated with grant funds from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and being implemented at TLH Airport. Together, Bailey and Adams quickly saw an opportunity to evaluate whether RAPIN can improve the performance of security operators versus traditional security models. At stake was not only the security of TLH Airport, but security across the Nation's airports, seaports, rail yards and other critical infrastructure installations that come under the purview of TSA and the Department of Homeland Security.

Said Professor Bailey, "Studies like this have not been done since the Cold War. With our access to the airport security operations and the cutting-edge RAPIN technology, we have an opportunity to shed practical light on improving security everywhere from a human behavior standpoint." Dr. Bailey and Marco Tomasi, one of Bailey's doctoral students, assembled a specialized team to work on the project including students from the Instructional Systems program at FSU as well as students from the Performance Management Track in Psychology. The FSU team has worked closely with David Pollard, the Superintendent of TLH Airport Operations, to gain access to his security staff and baseline their performance in the current environment so that it can be compared to operations after RAPIN.

The FSU study is called, "Human Performance in an Advanced Security System Environment." This first stage is due to be completed in the next six months. Until then, the FSU team will collect extensive amounts of data to support their findings and recommendations, while providing Abeo with real-time feedback on the RAPIN system. Said Adams, the RAPIN program manager, "This unique partnership will advance behavior analysis research under Dr. Bailey's leadership and provide us the practical means to improve security through RAPIN and similar systems we deploy in the future."
